Memory management in EasySMF

Postby pgiorda » Sat Jul 18, 2009 10:25 am

I was running Dataset Activity on a large set of files and ran Windows into a Memory Shortage situation. Now what I found out was that I had my Windows paging file disabled - but that begs the question, are you monitoring the memory usage by the various program functions so as to give us consumers a realistic expectation? How's that going? (I'm not trolling here, really just honestly interested.)

It's a reasonable question. At the moment some of the reports are quite memory-hungry.

It's very difficult to come up with a number for the amount of memory you need as is very dependent on how much data you report on, the time intervals and which reports you use.

PC memory is pretty cheap ($600 budget PCs seem to come with 2GB these days) so I would recommend at least 2GB, up to 3-4GB (whatever your Windows supports). It's only a 32 bit app at the moment so you won't see much benefit from more than that. The RMF reports will probably work OK for small systems in as little as 500MB. I have tested on a 500MB laptop, and it was fine until you looked at large lists of jobs etc. where it bogged down.

Memory usage is something I am aware of. I have enhancements planned to greatly reduce the amount of memory required for the largest reports (job lists, dataset lists etc.)
